PBC & Your Liver
Primary Biliary Cholangitis (formerly known as primary biliary cirrhosis) (PBC) is a rare disease caused by an autoimmune reaction that damages the ducts in the liver that transport bile. When these ducts become damaged or blocked, bile may not flow properly, instead collecting in the liver and causing further tissue damage.
PBC a serious medical condition
To better understand why PBC is a serious medical condition, it is important to recognize the variety of important functions the liver performs. Did you know:
- The liver is the largest organ inside your body.
- The liver helps the body digest food, store energy, and remove toxic materials.
- When the liver is healthy, it also helps fight infections and cleans blood.
- The liver is the only internal organ that can regenerate when it is damaged.
